This recipe makes a sweet and spicy turkey main dish. It is a flavorful alternative to traditional Sloppy Joes, using ground turkey and a homemade sauce.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 4 hamburger buns, split and toasted
  • Optional toppings: pickles, coleslaw, shredded cheese

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet or pot over medium heat. Add ground turkey and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Add chopped onion and green bell pepper to the skillet. Cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Stir in minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  4. Pour in tomato sauce, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, smoked paprika, and cayenne pepper. Stir to combine.
  5. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and let it cook for at least 15-20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. Stir occasionally.
  6. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  7. Spoon the turkey mixture onto toasted hamburger buns.
  8. Serve immediately with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • For a spicier dish, increase the amount of cayenne pepper or add a pinch of red pepper flakes.
  • For a milder flavor, reduce or omit the cayenne pepper.
  • You can prepare the turkey mixture ahead of time and reheat it gently before serving.
  • This recipe can also be served over rice, pasta, or baked potatoes.
