Spinach Stuffed Shells are a comforting and hearty Italian-American dish. Large pasta shells are filled with a creamy mixture of ricotta cheese, spinach, and seasonings, then baked in a rich tomato sauce. This recipe is perfect for a family dinner or a potluck.

  • Total Time: 60 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (12 ounce) box jumbo pasta shells
  • 1 (10 ounce) package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry
  • 15 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, plus more for topping
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 (24 ounce) jar marinara sauce
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Cook the jumbo pasta shells according to package directions until al dente. Drain and rinse with cold water to prevent sticking.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the thawed and squeezed dry spinach, ricotta cheese, egg, 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  4. Spread about 1 cup of marinara sauce in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  5. Carefully stuff each cooked pasta shell with the spinach and ricotta mixture.
  6. Arrange the stuffed shells in a single layer in the baking dish over the marinara sauce.
  7. Pour the remaining marinara sauce over the stuffed shells, ensuring they are well covered.
  8. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over the top of the sauce.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the sauce is heated through.
  10. If desired, sprinkle with additional Parmesan cheese before serving.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, sauté a small amount of onion or fresh garlic before adding it to the spinach mixture.
  • You can prepare the stuffed shells ahead of time and refrigerate them. Add an extra 10-15 minutes to the baking time if baking from cold.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
