Classic Italian spaghetti bolognese, a rich and savory meat sauce served over al dente spaghetti.

  • Total Time: 60 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 500g ground beef
  • 400g canned chopped tomatoes
  • 150ml beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 300g spaghetti
  • Fresh basil for garnish (optional)
  • Parmesan cheese for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  3. Add the ground beef to the pan, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until browned, draining any excess fat.
  4. Stir in the chopped tomatoes, beef broth, tomato paste, and oregano. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and cook for at least 30 minutes, or longer for a richer flavor. Stir occasionally.
  6. While the sauce is simmering, cook the spaghetti according to package directions until al dente.
  7. Drain the spaghetti and divide it among serving plates.
  8. Spoon the bolognese sauce over the spaghetti.
  9. Garnish with fresh basil and serve with Parmesan cheese, if desired.

Notes

  • For a deeper flavor, let the bolognese simmer for 1-2 hours.
  • You can add a splash of milk or cream to the sauce for a creamier texture.
  • Leftover bolognese can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
