Ingredients
Scale
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 cup chopped onion
- 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 6 hamburger buns, split and toasted
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain off any excess fat.
- Stir in onion, green bell pepper, and garlic. Cook until vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Stir well to combine.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened.
- Serve the sloppy joe mixture warm on toasted hamburger buns.
Notes
- For a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes with the chili powder.
- You can prepare the sloppy joe mixture ahead of time and reheat it gently on the stovetop.
- Consider serving with a side of coleslaw or potato chips.
