Sloppy Joes are a classic American sandwich. This recipe makes a savory, slightly sweet, and tangy ground beef mixture served on toasted buns. It’s a quick and easy meal for any weeknight.

  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 6 hamburger buns, split and toasted

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain off any excess fat.
  2. Stir in onion, green bell pepper, and garlic. Cook until vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Stir well to combine.
  4. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened.
  5. Serve the sloppy joe mixture warm on toasted hamburger buns.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes with the chili powder.
  • You can prepare the sloppy joe mixture ahead of time and reheat it gently on the stovetop.
  • Consider serving with a side of coleslaw or potato chips.
