Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound medium shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup cornmeal
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- 4 (6-inch) French bread rolls, split lengthwise
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon hot sauce
- 1/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- Shredded lettuce
- Sliced tomatoes
- Dill pickle slices
Instructions
- Rinse shrimp and pat dry.
- In a shallow dish, combine flour, cornmeal, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper.
- Pour buttermilk into another shallow dish.
- Dip each shrimp in buttermilk, then dredge in the flour mixture, pressing to coat.
- Heat 1 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry shrimp in batches for 2-3 minutes per side, until golden brown and cooked through. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- For the remoulade sauce, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, Dijon mustard, lemon juice, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder in a small bowl. Stir until smooth.
- Spread remoulade sauce on both sides of the split French bread rolls.
- Fill each roll with shredded lettuce, sliced tomatoes, pickle slices, and fried shrimp.
- Serve immediately.
Notes
- For extra crispy shrimp, double dredge them: dip in buttermilk, then flour, then buttermilk again, then flour.
- Adjust the amount of cayenne pepper and hot sauce to your preferred spice level.
- You can use pre-cooked shrimp if you prefer, but fresh shrimp will yield a better flavor and texture.
- Toast the French bread rolls lightly before assembling for added crunch.
