Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (plus extra for greasing)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Lightly grease a baking sheet or a 9-inch cast iron skillet.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
- Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk and melted butter.
- Mix with a wooden spoon or your hands until just combined. Do not overmix; the dough should be shaggy.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead for about 30 seconds, just enough to bring it together into a round loaf.
- Place the loaf on the prepared baking sheet or in the skillet.
- Using a sharp knife, cut a deep ‘X’ into the top of the loaf, about 1/2 inch deep. This helps the bread cook evenly.
- Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Notes
- For a softer crust, cover the hot bread with a clean tea towel as it cools.
- If you don’t have buttermilk, you can make your own by adding 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar to a measuring cup, then filling the rest with milk to make 1 3/4 cups. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes before using.
- This bread is best served fresh, but leftovers can be stored at room temperature for up to 2 days or frozen for longer.
