Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3 medium-sized apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1/4 cup brown sugar (for topping)
- 2 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces (for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round baking pan.
- In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the egg until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Gently fold in the sliced apples.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly.
- In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar and cold butter pieces. Use your fingertips to rub the butter into the brown sugar until a crumbly mixture forms.
- Sprinkle the brown sugar crumble evenly over the top of the cake batter.
- Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add a splash of alcohol-free vanilla extract to the batter.
- Serve warm with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of ice cream.
- Store leftover cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
