Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/3 cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • Coarse salt for topping

Instructions

  1. Mix warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add flour, salt, and melted butter. Knead until smooth.
  3. Let dough rise for 1 hour or until doubled.
  4. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C).
  5. Divide dough into small pieces and roll into balls.
  6. Boil water and baking soda. Drop dough balls in for 30 seconds.
  7. Place on baking sheet, brush with beaten egg, and sprinkle with coarse salt.
  8. Bake for 10-12 minutes until golden brown.
