  • 1 recipe double pie crust
  • 6 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
  2. On a lightly floured surface, roll out half the pie crust and fit into a 9-inch pie plate.
  3. In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss to coat evenly.
  4. Pour apple mixture into the pie crust. Dot with butter pieces.
  5. Roll out the remaining pie crust. Place over the apple filling. Crimp edges to seal. Cut several slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
  6. Bake for 15 minutes at 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
  7. Reduce oven temperature to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) and bake for an additional 35 to 45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  8. Remove from oven and let cool slightly.
  9. Warm the caramel sauce and drizzle generously over the pie before serving.

Notes

  • Granny Smith apples work well for baking as they hold their shape and provide a tart contrast to the sweet caramel.
  • For a richer flavor, use homemade caramel sauce.
  • Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
