Buttermilk pie is a classic dessert with a creamy, tangy filling and a flaky crust. It’s simple to make and perfect for any occasion.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 5 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (9 inch) unbaked pie crust
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in flour and salt.
  4. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in buttermilk and vanilla extract.
  5. Pour filling into the unbaked pie crust.
  6. Sprinkle with nutmeg.
  7. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes, or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Cool completely before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use full-fat buttermilk.
  • To prevent the crust from browning too much, you can cover the edges with aluminum foil during the last 15-20 minutes of baking.
  • This pie is best served chilled.
  • Store leftover pie in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
