Ingredients
Scale
- 300g wholemeal flour
- 100g plain white flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 300ml buttermilk
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F). Lightly flour a baking sheet.
- In a large bowl, combine the wholemeal flour, plain white flour, baking soda, and salt. Mix well.
- Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk.
- Using your hands, gently mix the ingredients until they just come together to form a soft, shaggy dough. Do not overmix.
- Turn the dough out onto the floured baking sheet and gently shape it into a round loaf, about 2 inches thick.
- Using a sharp knife, cut a deep cross into the top of the loaf. This helps it to cook evenly and is traditional.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Remove from the oven and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing and serving.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, you can add a tablespoon of wheat bran or oats to the dry ingredients.
- If you don’t have buttermilk, you can make your own by adding 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar to 300ml of milk and letting it sit for 5-10 minutes until it curdles.
- Leftover soda bread can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
