A classic dessert featuring tender baked apples topped with a sweet, buttery, and crumbly oat topping. Perfect for a comforting treat.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 10 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium baking apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for filling)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for filling)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (for filling)
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (for topping)
  • 1 cup rolled oats (for topping)
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar (for topping)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for topping)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for topping)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (for topping)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (for topping)
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and lemon juice. Toss to coat the apples evenly.
  3. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it out in an even layer.
  4. In another large bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Whisk to combine.
  5. Add the cold butter pieces to the dry ingredients. Using your fingertips or a pastry blender, cut the butter into the mixture until coarse crumbs form.
  6. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple mixture in the baking dish.
  7. Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbly.
  8. Let the apple crumble cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract to the apple filling.
  • Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • If the topping browns too quickly, loosely tent the dish with aluminum foil.
